Breeding Color Genetics
The Black and Tan colored Cavalier is the hardest color to figure out the color genetics on, but through researching the pedigree if there are only black and tan or ruby ancestry for a minimum of three generations then the chances are the black and tan does not carry the white gene.
If a Black and Tan carries the white gene and they are bred to a Blenheim or Tri Color then all 4 colors are possible. If bred to a Ruby that also carries the white gene then all 4 colors are possible. Both whole colors (Black and Tan or Ruby) must carry the white gene for broken colors (Blenheim or TriColor) to appear.
If a Black and Tan is a true whole color then no matter what color choice they are bred to only whole colors are possible, but if bred to a broken color white mismarking can appear on the puppies.
Faults: White on whole colors. However, in the show ring all Cavaliers will have faults so a well balanced/structured Cavalier should not be counted out due to white mismarkings and many whole colors with minor white mismarkings do go on to obtain their championship title.
